Trigger

User types /caveman-stats.
Status line automatically displays cumulative savings in Claude Code (e.g. [CAVEMAN] ⛏ 12.4k).

Mechanism

The skill is a placeholder; actual work is done by hooks/caveman-mode-tracker.js.
The hook reads Claude Code session logs, computes actual token usage vs "normal mode" baseline.
Hook returns decision: "block" with formatted stats as the reason — model does no computation.
Status line can be disabled via CAVEMAN_STATUSLINE_SAVINGS=0.

Result

User sees session token savings with absolute numbers and percentages.
--share flag generates a tweetable one-line summary.
All data is log-based, not AI-estimated, providing trustworthy metrics.

Two Typical Use Cases

Scenario 01

Quantifying caveman savings

After multiple rounds of conversation in caveman mode, the developer types `/caveman-stats` to see cumulative token and cost savings. Data is read directly from the Claude Code log file for accuracy. This feedback loop provides tangible proof of the "say less, do more" value. The `--share` flag generates a tweetable one-line summary for team sharing.

Session-level ROI tracking

Team managers or budget owners need to understand AI coding assistant token consumption across projects. The caveman-compress skill compresses natural language memory files (CLAUDE.md, todos, preferences) into caveman format, saving ~46% input tokens on every subsequent session. It uses a Python script (`scripts/__main__.py`) for automated compression, preserving all technical content, code, URLs, and structure. The compressed version overwrites the original, with a human-readable backup saved as `FILE.original.md`. Key output: compress once, save tokens every session forever.
